Agios Paisios – Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and Saint Arsenios of Cappadocia

The women’s Holy Monastery of St. John the Theologian is located in Souroti, Thessaloniki. Souroti is about 28 kilometres from Thessaloniki, not far from the main road that connects the city with the capital of Halkidiki, Polygyros.

The monastery is dedicated to Saint John the Theologian and Saint Arsenios the Kappadocian. In the monastery there are the relics of Saint Arsenios of Cappadocia in the Catholic church and the tomb of Saint Paisios.

The nuns of the monastery were guided by Elder Paisios. Elder Paisios passed away on 12 July 1994 and was buried next to the church of St. Arsenios. Since then, every year on 11-12 July, on the anniversary of the burial of the Elder, a vigil is held at the Holy Retreat, with the participation of thousands of believers from Greece and abroad.

His proclamation as a Saint of the Orthodox Church was made by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on 13 January 2015, while the Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on 12 July, the day of his burial in the bone.
